Future Medicines Institute

Northen Ireland has a growing precision medicine sector with research and industry active in diagnostics and biomarker technologies. The challenge of translating precision-medicine capabilities into wide scale clinical delivery, that does not exacerbate health inequalities, requires investment and clear pathways for integration.

To build an easy to access ‘front door’ into precision medicine, Ulster University is a partner of the Future Medicines Institute (FMI). Led by Queen’s University Belfast, FMI is an industry-focused hub for research, innovation, and skills, enhancing Northern Ireland's sustainability while translating cutting-edge scientific discoveries into practical solutions that improve patient outcomes and enhance quality of life. Integrating expertise from various fields including biomedical science, chemical biology, and data analytics.

The research areas within FMI include:

• Drug Discovery and Development: Exploring new compounds and therapies to tackle diseases more effectively.
• Genomics and Precision Medicine: Harnessing the power of genetics to tailor treatments to individual patients.
• Diagnostics and Biomarkers: Developing advanced diagnostic methods to identify diseases early and accurately.

A consortium of industrial partners and research partners are collectively focusing on precision medicine, novel therapeutics, innovative diagnostics and advanced healthcare technologies.

Some of the industry and ecosystem partners include Almac, Fusion Antibodies, HIRANI, Randox, Sonrai and others. Being a partner within this consortium, Ulster University are best placed to support industry informed research projects and support the innovation journey through product development, trials and clinical integration through its strong partnerships with the Belfast Trust.
