Putting Safety at the Centre of HealthTech: Why 'Patient-First' Design Matters at CDHT

On World Patient Safety Day, the global health community centres on a fundamental truth: every individual deserves healthcare that is safe, effective, and patient-centric. At the Centre for Digital Healthcare Technology (CDHT), this day of recognition serves as a continued purpose, a call for collaboration and more than a moment of reflection.

As digital medical devices, wearable sensors, and artificial intelligence increasingly enter wards, homes and community settings, technology is transforming how we predict, diagnose, and treat illness. But as health tech advances rapidly, one principle must remain core to what we do — that technology must adapt to the patient, not the other way around.

Bridging the Gap Between Engineering and the Ward

CDHT researchers have decades of experience in medical innovation development, and we know the importance of clinical and patient collaboration to inform advanced research via PPI-Public Patient Interaction Groups. When digital healthcare tools are designed without direct input from the people using them, we risk friction, diagnostic error, and usability challenges that directly impact patient outcomes.

Global health challenges cannot be eased with devices created in a vacuum. Through CDHT’s integrated, three-way co-creation platform uniting academic researchers, clinical teams, and industry partners, we embed the living reality of patients and clinicians into every step of our development lifecycle and we recognise that further work to make this better needs to be done.

From smart bio-sensing equipment to AI-driven diagnostic pipelines, CDHT’s focus is grounded in human-centered engineering via our UX laboratory and the CDT Clinical Living Lab based at the Belfast Trust. By testing and refining solutions alongside healthcare professionals and patients within real-world environments, we ensure our technologies are intuitive, reliable and fundamentally safe.

Co-Creation as a Foundation for Trust

Patient safety is ultimately built on trust. Clinicians need to trust that AI-supported tools, for example, offer transparent and accurate insights. Patients need to trust that continuous monitoring devices safeguard their privacy while protecting their health.

Achieving this level of trust demands rigorous validation, multi-disciplinary collaboration, and an unwavering commitment to co-design. By bringing engineers, data scientists, cardiologists and patient groups together early, we streamline clinical workflows, reduce innovation failure rates and support the acceleration of safer med-tech based solutions to market.
